The Dhikr That Heals Every Kind of Stress: Returning to Allah ﷻ
"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
— Qur'an 13:28
Life is filled with trials. Some burdens come from the pursuit of this world, some from the actions of people, and others arise from our own mistakes and shortcomings. Islam does not leave the believer without guidance. Allah ﷻ has given us powerful words of remembrance (dhikr) that strengthen the heart, calm the soul, and renew our trust in Him.
When the heart feels overwhelmed, return to the One who created it.
When Your Stress Is Caused by the Dunya
Your dhikr is:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ
La ilaha illa Allah
"There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah."
This is the greatest statement ever uttered. It reminds us that wealth, status, success, and worldly problems are temporary, while Allah alone is Eternal.
When the dunya begins to consume your heart, repeat this declaration with sincerity. It shifts your focus from temporary worries to the everlasting Lord.
Allah says:
"Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is everlasting."
(Qur'an 16:96)
And He reminds us:
"The life of this world is nothing but amusement and play, whereas the Home of the Hereafter is best for those who are mindful of Allah."
(Qur'an 6:32)
When Your Stress Is Caused by People
Your dhikr is:
لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ
La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
"There is no power and no might except with Allah."
People may criticize you, disappoint you, betray you, or misunderstand you. But no one can benefit or harm you except by Allah's permission.
This beautiful dhikr reminds us that ultimate power belongs only to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ described it as:
"A treasure from the treasures of Paradise."
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
Allah says:
"If Allah touches you with hardship, none can remove it except Him. And if He intends good for you, none can withhold His bounty."
(Qur'an 10:107)
When you remember this, the opinions and actions of people lose their power over your heart.
When Your Stress Is Caused by Yourself
Your dhikr is:
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ
Astaghfirullah
"I seek Allah's forgiveness."
Sometimes our greatest burden is ourselves—our sins, regrets, poor decisions, and shortcomings.
Istighfar is not merely asking for forgiveness. It is returning to Allah with humility, hope, and trust in His infinite mercy.
Allah promises:
"And whoever does evil or wrongs himself then seeks Allah's forgiveness will find Allah Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."
(Qur'an 4:110)
The Prophet ﷺ himself sought Allah's forgiveness more than seventy times a day, teaching us that no one is beyond the need for repentance.
Every sincere Astaghfirullah cleanses the heart and brings us closer to our Lord.
Call Upon Allah by His Beautiful Names
Allah says:
"And to Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them."
(Qur'an 7:180)
When making du'a, call upon Allah using His Beautiful Names that match your need.
Al-Fattah (ٱلْفَتَّاحُ) – The Opener
When every door appears closed, remember that Allah alone opens doors no one can shut.
As-Sami' (ٱلسَّمِيعُ) – The All-Hearing
Every whispered prayer, every tear, every silent cry is heard by Him.
Al-Mujib (ٱلْمُجِيبُ) – The One Who Responds
Allah never ignores a sincere servant. He answers every du'a in the way that is best—whether immediately, later, or by replacing it with something better.
Allah says:
"And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the supplicant whenever he calls upon Me."
(Qur'an 2:186)
Al-Wahhab (ٱلْوَهَّابُ) – The Bestower
Every blessing, every opportunity, every answered prayer is a gift from Allah alone.
Nothing is impossible for the One whose treasures never diminish.
Trust Allah's Wisdom
Sometimes Allah answers by giving exactly what we ask.
Sometimes He delays because the timing is not yet right.
Sometimes He replaces our request with something better.
And sometimes He protects us from what we ourselves thought was good.
Allah says:
"Perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you, and perhaps you love something while it is bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know."
(Qur'an 2:216)
The believer never loses by turning to Allah.
A Heart at Peace
Whenever life becomes heavy, remember:
- If your burden is the dunya, say La ilaha illa Allah.
- If your burden is people, say La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
- If your burden is your own shortcomings, say Astaghfirullah.
And whenever you raise your hands in du'a, call upon Allah with His Beautiful Names:
Al-Fattah. As-Sami'. Al-Mujib. Al-Wahhab.
He hears every whisper.
He knows every tear.
He opens every closed door.
He responds to every sincere heart.
May Allah ﷻ fill our hearts with tranquility, increase us in His remembrance, forgive our sins, answer our du'as, and make us among those whose hearts find peace through His remembrance.
Ameen.
